“What they did was unfortunate,” Trump said of the LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill, and Cody Riley, who Chinese authorities arrested under suspicion they stole designer sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store.
As Fox News reported, Trump spoke with Xi and asked him to resolve the players' case. “He's been terrific,” Trump said of Xi while talking to the press aboard Air Force One on Tuesday.
The three players opened their season with a game in Shanghai against Georgia Tech on Saturday. They flew back to Los Angeles on Tuesday but, according to Trump, faced potentially “very long prison sentences.”
“They do not play games,” Trump said of the Chinese authorities.
Trump's comments came as he arrived in Hawaii after a 12-day tour of Asia. Asian leaders, Trump said, discussed North Korea and trade with him. The president praised Japan, China, and South Korea for their cooperation in dealing with North Korea.
